Patient Information

1.How often should I visit the Dentist?

Unless otherwise advised, the rule of thumb is usually every six (6) months, that is, twice per year. A lot can change in six (6) months, we use our mouth for eating, drinking & speaking so it is exposed to many substances, which may harm our teeth & gums. Professional dental treatments help to minimise incidents of tooth decay & progressive gum disease. Let us help you to prevent oral disease for a healthy, beautiful smile!

As strange as it may seem, tooth decay & gum disease can progress for years undetected! Persons tend not to have any symptoms (pain, swelling, discomfort, shaking/loose teeth) until the disease is quite advanced, which usually leads to tooth loss. Oral disease, while common, is largely preventable. Regular dental examinations facilitate early detection of oral infection & destructive oral hygiene habits. Timely correction and treatment of dental conditions prevent tooth loss and the necessity of costly procedures to save your teeth. Prevention is always better than cure! Invest in your oral health today!

Our mouth is one of the main portals into our body. Poor oral health = poor overall health. Bleeding gums, bad breath, pain/discomfort, swelling are signs of poor oral health. These symptoms may take years manifest significantly. Many persons remain unaware of serious oral conditions until it is too late due to the lack of noteworthy signs. A quick, comprehensive examination of the mouth by our trained professionals will certainly illuminate the status of your oral health! We're happy to provide oral health tips if necessary, and to answer any & all your questions so that you are fully in the know!

Floss, floss, floss! Floss is your only tool to prevent/treat gum disease. No floss = definite gum disease! There is naturally space between our gums and the surfaces of our teeth, only the floss is small enough to clean these spaces and also between your teeth to prevent the development of tooth decay in that area. Floss at least once per day (unless otherwise advised by a trained professional), preferably after brushing at night before bed. Use only a soft toothbrush when brushing. A hard/firm toothbrush causes irreparable damage to your gum & teeth (more useful for cleaning tough surfaces such as shoes or tiles). Use a soft rag to clean your body? Use a soft toothbrush to clean your teeth.

1.What is a Dental Emergency?

  • Broken, fractured or lost teeth
  • Lost, fractured or damaged dental filling/restoration
  • Cracked, damaged dentures (false teeth)
  • Unbearable/severe toothache or sensitivity
  • Facial swelling, fever, ear ache caused by decayed tooth
  • Foreign objects lodged in teeth/gum
  • Post-extraction pain

Immediately or as soon as possble! Swellings to the face or in the mouth, caused by infected teeth/gum, can be very dangerous and may result in death. See a Dentist urgently to conclusively treat the source of infection. Apply a cold compress to the area to help reduce pain & growth of swelling. A cold compress may also be used to alleviate a toothache.

First, gently rinse any dirt/debris from the surface of the tooth, DO NOT touch or remove any tissue that is still attached to it. Put the tooth back into the socket. If this is not possible, keep the tooth submerged in milk, salted water (mix table salt in water) or saliva. Visit the Dentist ASAP for reimplantation - success decreases after an hour.

Depending on the nature of the procedure, some pain after dental (tooth) extraction (removal) may be normal, this may occur after difficult extractions (usually surgical extractions or wisdom teeth extractions) after the anaesthetic wears off. If pain begins two (2) days after the procedure, accompanied with malodour and/or bad taste in the mouth - the area is infected, visit the Dentist ASAP for review and treatment of extraction site. Always listen carefully to post - op instructions given after an extraction, follow instructions dutifully  to prevent infection of extraction site.
